This goes out to all the customers who shop at Delis. I work in the Fry’s Deli and it seems like it’s everyday that I just want to pull my hair out because of customers like the ones I’m going to rant about below. If you are one of these, shame on you and please change your ways soon before you even THINK about stepping up to my deli counter.
1) DO NOT mistake a deli for a damn Subway.
Yes, delis do make subs, but they make them IN THE MORNING. The people that come in the afternoon don’t know the proper way to make subs because that’s not their job. If you come in the late afternoon looking for a sub with turkey and cheese and all you find is ham and cheese, oh well, deal with it. Or better yet, go to Subway and get your sandwich there, they make it a hell of a lot better than we do and plus, it’s much cheaper.
2) DO NOT ask us where things are in the store.
We work in the deli, that means we are behind that counter every 8 hr shift and the last thing we want to do is walk around the store to know where everything is at. If you have trouble finding an item in the store, ask the person that is NOT wearing an apron because I can tell you, that person will not know where anything is at. The only thing to ask a deli person for is the deli itself and nothing else. Often we’ll say, “Oh, I think it’s aisle 10” just to get you off our backs so we can go back to what were paid to do.
3) DO NOT give us the stink eye if we tell you “I don’t know”
Sometimes, I’ll try to be nice and honest with you and tell you, “I’m sorry, but I don’t know where that’s at.” and you give me the stink eye? It’s not my fault I don’t leave the deli to walk around the store and make it my personal mission to know where everything’s at. And no, I don’t shop there because why on earth would I go back to the place I’m trying to escape from?
4) DO NOT ask us to give you a million samples.
Come on people! Know what the hell you want, don’t ask us to sample this and sample that. We are allowed to only give three samples, that’s it. Stop asking us for more, just whip out that wallet and start paying for something!
5) DO NOT ask us to change our menu
Know this: 4 pc chicken: 1 wing, 1 leg, 1 breast, 1 thigh
8 pc chicken: 2 wings, 2 legs, 2 breasts, 2 thighs
16 pc chicken: 4 wings, 4 legs, 4 breasts,4 thighs
20 pc chicken: 5 wings, 5 breasts, 5 thighs, and 5 legs
Don’t ask us to replace the white meat with more dark meat just because you don’t like breasts and wings. Too damn bad. I will charge you how I see fit. And please don’t use the excuse that you’ve been standing there for fifteen minutes and therefore you should get your way, I’ve been standing here for nearly eight hours and you don’t hear me complaining!
6) DO NOT ask us to bring out fresh fried chicken.
The chicken in the hot case is completely fine, otherwise, we would toss it out. If you want fresh fried chicken, go to KFC.
7) DO NOT pick out your pieces.
It’s hard for us to deli workers to see where your finger is pointing at through the glass and it’s like a little game that goes on forever and there’s customers waiting behind you who aren’t so picky. Every piece is the same and they all taste the same. Just take it.
8) DO NOT touch the glass
A big pet peeve of mine I recently discovered when I started working at the Fry’s deli. I hate customers who point out what they want instead of telling me. TELL US what you want. I know America is suffering through intense laziness, but just speak. It’s not hard to say “I want a pound of Country Potato Salad” Ok. I can do that. But if you’re pointing with your finger pressed up against the glass, I just want to give you a paper towel and glass cleaner and tell you to clean that shit up.
9) DO NOT gripe about prices for five minutes
Our economy sucks right now so of course our food is going to be expensive but it you really want it, suck it up and just pay for it. Don’t sit there and yell at me about prices because I could careless. You made the decision to shop here and you can also make the decision to go SOMEWHERE ELSE.
10) DO NOT ask us to assist you after we have closed down
Seriously people? The deli closes at 9:00 PM. Don’t come up afterwards and ask us to cut you a pound of Blazing Buffalo Chicken. If you see the lights are off, bags are over the salads, the hot case is empty, and the slicers are covered, just walk by. If you desperately need a pound of Blazing Buffalo Chicken, then how about you clean the slicers?
These are my biggest pet peeves with customers. Seriously, I know Frys’ policy is customer’s 1st because they give us money, but I think employees should earn respect too because after all, we are the ones working to keep the customers satisfied. Without us, there would be no customers, and then no income. EMPLOYEES 1st CUSTOMERS 2nd!
